The combined workforce for GTS’s Meridian Tobacco is 15,000 incorporating permanent employees, seasonal workers, and contracted farmers. According to Uganda’s 2014 National Census, the average size of Ugandan household is 4.7. This means that when we add the 15,000 persons earning a living from MTC to their dependents, their number increases to 75,000. Small businesses, especially transporters and lodgings also benefit during the harvesting season. This is still a modest beginning. Nonetheless, our joint effort with national and district authorities, community leaders, and civil society for improving lives is for real. This is illustrated by entrepreneurial Ugandans who have emerged from the enabling environment and are already charting their own paths to success, as shown in our story in the video below.
